When the merchandise sales numbers came out last week there was a lot made about the Manhattan Knicks getting back on top. However, according to Marc Berman of the NY Post, it’s the Brooklyn Nets, not the Knicks, that have been No. 1 in sales since they actually began selling Brooklyn gear in late September.

The Nets initially appeared to be low on the report because they were announcing sales going back to April, but until September they were still selling New Jersey and not Brooklyn apparel. And who is going to buy apparel for a team that doesn’t exist any more?

It’ll be more interesting to see if the Nets can sustain their time at the top. Unlike Knicks fans, who have been buying up their clothing for decades, Nets fans didn’t even have the opportunity to buy Brooklyn duds until recently. Once the die-hard fans buy all their apparel will there be enough casual fans to keep sales up? It’s hard to say, but not impossible to imagine. Brooklyn is the third biggest city in the country after all and they have been competitive so far. It also doesn’t hurt to have Jay-Z out there constantly pimping Nets gear.

We’ll have to wait and see. Until then we can bask in the glory of being No. 1 for a two month span.
